The first quarter at Hollister High School has ended. We will have early dismissal this Thursday and Friday, October 21 and 22. Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled from 2-7:30 p.m. on Thursday and from 2-3:30 p.m. on Friday. Grade cards may be picked up from your child’s TNT instructor. You may also take the opportunity at this time to visit with other instructors, as well. Everybody attending will get their name placed in a drawing for prizes.

I hope to meet some of you parents on Thursday and Friday.

Students will be having a test Wednesday over Unit #1. I have discovered a website called StudyStack.com where I can enter terms/definitions and it creates flash cards, crossword puzzles and other games for students to play to reinforce learning. Check it out! It’s actually fun!!

This week students will be studying about Work-Related Forms and Laws and Employee Benefits and Incentives. Students will learn how to complete a Form W-4 and discover what deductions are withheld from their paychecks. They will learn how to compute gross and net pay. A test is tentatively scheduled for Friday.

Personal Finance – 8/16 to 8/20

This week in personal finance students are learning basic economic principles to set a foundation for this semester’s course. Students will discover there is a correlation between education and future earnings and will research a career which interests them as well as create a collage poster of information about that career. The posters are displayed on my wall throughout the semester. It is always interesting to see the types of occupations that students choose. Students will also prepare a 2-minute speech to introduce their career to the class and share the job description, salary, job outlook, and education and training necessary.

Personal Finance is offered as dual-credit course through Missouri State University for three hours credit. Students will receive information in the near future and a representative from Missouri State will be at Hollister to answer any questions. Those interested need to make sure paperwork is turned in to the Counselor’s Office.

Welcome to another school year at Hollister High School. Summer seemed to have passed too quickly and we’re back in the classroom all ready. I’m looking forward to a great year.

Graduation Approaches

Graduation ceremonies will be Sunday, May 16, at the Tri-Lakes Center in Branson beginning at 3 p.m. Make plans to attend and honor the Hollister High School Class of 2010 for their accomplishments. The Honor’s Assembly was held Friday night with awards being presented by teachers and scholarships and special recognition presented to seniors.

Underclassmen have three more weeks until their summer vacation begins. The last day of school is Thursday, May 27.
